Kathy is especially proud of the education loans because they are critical for their members career development.  “We’ve never had a default on our education loans,” she commented.

During Kathy’s tenure at the credit union, membership tripled, partly because of the education loans, and assets increased from $700,000 to $23 million.  The credit union staff doubled from one to two employees after Kathy convinced the board, it was necessary to have an additional person to help the credit union grow.  Presently a staff of three service their members.

Kathy hired Jeanne Staley 35 years ago and they’ve worked together over the decades to build the credit union to where it is today.  Kathy even accumulated 376 unused sick days while at the credit union.  She said “I’ve never dreaded a day of coming into work, and I’m proud to be leaving the credit union in good shape.”

Personalized service is the hallmark of small credit unions and WISE CU is a classic example of a boutique credit union.  Kathy has provided customized, meaningful service to members which has helped many people avoid bankruptcy.

Prior to working at the credit union, Kathy worked as an accountant.  After having three daughters, she decided a part-time job with 12:00-4:30 pm hours would be a perfect fit.  Her first experience working at a credit union was when she helped stuff statements for her church credit union at 12 years old.

Kathy was born and raised in the St. Louis area.  She plans to relocate to St. Louis from Quincy so she can be closer to her large family, including five sisters and four of her six grandchildren.  She plans to travel and enjoy time with her family.

The three pieces of advice for future credit union leaders from Kathy are 1) Remember members come first, 2) You can’t be everything to everyone, and 3) Find your niche.
