Lisa Lillis began her career in the credit union movement in the 1980s as a teller at Kankakee Catholic CU, now known as CommonWealth CU, alongside Raeann Love, CEO, CommonWealth CU, Jenna Erwin, former CEO, Elite Community CU, and Danita Swanson, CEO, 2 Rivers Area CU. Lisa is the fourth CEO at Maternity BVM CU since it was founded in 1957.
Over the years, Lisa has witnessed many changes, especially related to policies, regulations, and technology. She understands the importance of modern technology and keeping pace with consumer preferences as long as credit unions stay in touch with their original purpose of helping members. Lisa said “Technology doesn’t need to dictate our roots and values of giving back to our members. Keep it simple.”
In 1997, Lisa shared an idea with her board of directors to reward members who take out loans at the credit union by providing interest rebates. “We reward members who keep money on deposit by paying a fair dividend and believe it is important to acknowledge our loan members in good standing,” said Lisa.
Bringing joy to people, making a difference by getting families into new or used vehicles, assisting members who are struggling get through tough time, and receiving freshly colored pictures for her bulletin board from little kids are among Lisa’s favorite memories at the credit union. “I’ve been blessed with a wonderful board and staff. That’s what makes all this work,” said Lisa.
According to Lisa, the future of the credit union movement depends on people who have the drive and passion to help members and who can provide good advice to guide members to become fiscally responsible. “Treat members like family. Make them feel at home. Listen, smile, and genuinely care,” advises Lisa.
Immediate retirement plans include gardening, spending time with her family, and decluttering her house. “Everyone says they will declutter. We will see if it actually happens,” joked Lisa. She loves to vacation and looks forward to exploring places in the United States where she hasn’t yet visited.
Lisa’s longer-term plans are to volunteer to help people who don’t have families. “I would enjoy being good company, driving people on errands, or anything to brighten somebody’s day,” she said.
Lisa is confident the credit union is in good hands going forward. She will remain on the board through the end of the year as part of her transition. She said “It’s been a great ride.”
